Why Your Uncle Should Never Choose Your Wedding Cake

Sample Wedding CakeI’m willing to bet you’ve seen a wedding cake before. You know it’s supposed to be tall, elegant, and intricately decorated with flowers, lacework, and ribbons all made of delicious icing.

Just like this picture here.

At least, that’s what I see in my head when I think “wedding cake.” Don’t you?

Well, last weekend, I attended the wedding of my niece Jill (not her real name) to a dude named Jack (not his real name, either). Actually, I did more than just attend it. My mother and I were in charge of decorating the church hall for the reception. The uncle of the groom had offered to provide the wedding cake.

I was taking care of some last minute details in the reception hall when three rough-looking, jean-clad guys carried in this beauty…

Apparently, Uncle What’s-His-Name sent these three fellas to the local grocery store’s bakery section that morning to come up with a cake for the wedding — and someone decided that taking a random sheet cake and placing a differently-decorated round cake on top of it would do the trick.

I’m guessing the cupcakes were an afterthought.

As they placed the cake on the table, I couldn’t help but notice how it clashed with the bride’s purple color theme. (How did they manage to find cakes with every color icing under the sun EXCEPT purple?) Then, things got even more interesting…

The guys started putting the cupcakes ON TOP of the cake. Did they think the little round cake looked lonely? I just had to ask…

“What are you doing?”

“We have no idea,” one of them said.

I believed him.

I must confess something, though. As mystified as I was over the wedding cake, I was secretly delighted. Life can be stranger than fiction, and authors love it when stuff like this happens. There’s a very good chance an unusual wedding cake will work its way into one of my novels someday! (You’ve been warned.)

So, what do you think? Is this the oddest wedding cake ever? Or, have you seen (and tasted) something even more unusual? Let me know in the comments below!
